A tsunami advisory issued Saturday morning was lifted shortly before 5 p.m. after high seas, but no large waves, washed north.
The National Weather Service reported, however, that there could still be a danger from high seas in some low-lying areas along the coast.
An 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the Chilean coast early Saturday morning prompted the a tsunami warning across the Pacific. Most of the warnings have been lifted for Hawaii, which told people to head to higher ground.
The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said Saturday morning that Oregon’s coastal cities could see waves about a foot or two high arriving during the afternoon.
An advisory is not as severe as a tsunami warning and does not require evacuation of some coastal cities and towns.
Hawaii sounded the tsunami alarms early Saturday morning, forcing many people staying in beachfront condos and hotels to move to higher ground. So far, waves reaching about 6 feet high have rolled into Tahiti, but no damage has been reported on any of the Hawaiian Islands.
A tsunami warning has extended all the way from Mexico’s Pacific Coast, up the California coast, into Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, where the final days of the Winter Olympic Games are being held.
The quake hit at 3:34 a.m. Chilean time about 60 miles northeast of Concepcion, Chile. Within three hours, buoys recorded the tsunami wave extending into the Pacific. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it took about 34 minutes for the wave to travel about 100 miles northeast from the quake’s epicenter.
More than 200 people are confirmed dead near the quake’s epicenter, and millions of others were affected. There have been about three dozen aftershocks, with a 6.3-magnitude temblor felt in Argentina.
Excuse me, but its our first priority to warn our own citizens, for sure no one else will. America gives away more help around the world by far than any other country. Shame on you for calling us selfish. We have been and still are the MOST generous country in the world.

Japan had their own tsunami warning too. But why would that need to be in an Oregon paper?

Doesn't seem as though a news story regarding the possibility of danger on the US Coast(s) would constitute being "selfish & self-centered".
News stories OFTEN carry information pertinent to the immediate safety of the citizens to which they are presented.
A story for instance, say regarding an escaped convict would certainly not attempt to detract from the crimes they may have commited; it would simply be information important to the citizens, particularly those in the area surrounding the suspects presumed location.
Stop assuming the worst - the Trib is often concerned with more immediate local issues pertinent to it's readership on a daily basis than issues better suited to coverage by an International News Organization.

Number one on the commentary list should take a "chill Pill".
America's generosity always gets crapped upon. It will be interesting to see if any country comes to our aid when the big one hits...and it will hit.
Let calm heads prevail in the earthquake ravaged Chile. They are good people, just like most American's.

It seems to me that people in tsunami zones on the Oregon coast may want to know there is the possibility of a tsunami wave today. I don't find it at all odd that a local newspaper would report that. Why are people so angry?

Calling us selfish. That's not right. Yes we do care about what happend in Chile. But now,as they say they do not need the outside help at this time, then we need to worry about who is gonna be affected next so that way there are no other tragities. America does care about what happens to our people and we also care about what happens to others in other areas, so to call us selfish, is ridiculous!!!!!!!

Of course my thoughts are with Chile, but when there is a threat to our coast, it gets my immediate concern! I hope there was no damage to either, but I would be helping the people on our shoreline first.
I agree with the other comments, that the first comment was ridiculous indeed!

To the first person who commented on this subject, Are YOU an American? Are YOU the ONLY American who is "not selfish"? I think not. If you feel so disgusted with America please feel free to leave at any time. This is still a FREE COUNTRY and you CAN still leave whenever you want to, unlike some other countries around the world. Thanks to the thousands and thousands of unselfish Americans who have given their lives to protect our freedoms, even yours. Go suck your thumb somewhere else.
